Supreme Court CJI Criticizes Lawyer for Inappropriate Language
During a Supreme Court hearing on Monday, Chief Justice DY Chandrachud reprimanded a lawyer for repeatedly using the word "Yeah," which was deemed inappropriate for the court’s decorum. Expressing displeasure, the CJI said, "This is a court, not a coffee shop." Following this, the lawyer switched to speaking in Marathi. This incident highlights the importance of maintaining discipline and language propriety in court.
The hearing was regarding a 2018 petition, where the lawyer had named former Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi as a respondent. Surprised by this, CJI Chandrachud questioned, "How can you file a petition under Article 32 with a judge as a respondent?" Article 32 allows citizens to appeal to the Supreme Court in case of fundamental rights violations.
During the exchange, the lawyer’s casual use of "Ya ya" angered the CJI. He sternly reminded the lawyer of the court's dignity. This news was widely discussed alongside Political news in Hindi.
