Minimum wage laws create an important basic income for low skill workers by reducing poverty and providing stability with a income floor for the least productive.
The United States is better off with a balance on immigration - not perfectly closed or perfectly open borders. A system in which people can enter legally for work, after screening and matching with jobs, is good for economic growth and fills gaps in labor markets that face shortages. But when borders are completely closed, this creates economic harm to industries and businesses that rely upon immigrant labor or benefit from it. When open and unchecked to allow as much immigration as possible, it can overload public, taxpayer supported, resources available to host populations. The best option is always a fair, secure, and flexible system that meets economic needs and upholds humanitarian values.
